Best Coast has released a new lyric video, via Funny or Die, for the track "This Lonely Morning." It features Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno playing tennis and really looking the part, in their own way. Wardrobe was on top of it. Not everyone plays tennis in thigh-high stockings and a plaid skirt, but of course Cosentino can pull it off. The song is from the band's recent mini-album Fade Away.
The song lyrics appear written on tennis balls hanging from strings in an installation around Cosentino's side of the court. She maintains her cool and collected vibe while wearing a Joni Mitchell 'Tour 76" bomber jacket. Air guitars are replaced with tennis rackets as the duo appear to let loose away from the game.
Who knew a black sharpie and some tennis balls was all it took to make a compelling new music video? There are clearly ways to promote a track on a low budget, although the way the video was shot does display a level of sophistication.
Many tennis balls were sacrificed in the making of this video, but it was for a good cause. It is possible that the concept was inspired by Vampire Weekend's video for "Giving Up The Gun," but in this case there weren't cameos from RZA, Joe Jonas and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Fade Away was released in October. Rolling Stone has ranked the album number 36 on their list of best albums in 2013 and commented: "It's just seven songs but still felt like a breakthrough."
