Foo Fighters are one of the greatest "offshoot" rock bands of all time, the product of Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl's side project he developed while writing songs on the road. Now, the Foo gets its own version of itself, with bassist Nate Mendel breaking rank to release a new album under the moniker Lieutenant and announce a solo tour.

The record is called If I Kill This Thing We're All Going to Eat for a Week, and it is due March 10 via Dine Alone Records. You can listen to a sample below:

Mendel has not spoken about the new LP much, but he did recently recount the time in the late 1990s when he quit Foo Fighters for 12 hours.

"It was so instructive about how my own brain works in making decisions, because it seemed like intellectually the right thing to do, and then as soon as I followed through with making that decision, I saw it from a completely different perspective and I took more of a visceral viewpoint on it," Mendel told Rolling Stone Australia. "That was the wrong choice. It's really helped me with head-and-the-heart kind of decisions in my life."

He likely will not be leaving FF again until the band falls apart. For now, though, Lieutenant will get a moment in the sun while Mendel tours with his own band.
