Maroon 5 singer and The Voice judge Adam Levine is not nominated for an Oscar this year, but he performed the song -- "Lost Stars," from Begin Again -- that got songwriters Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois a nod at the Academy Awards on Feb. 22.

"I wish I had written the song," he told The Hollywood Reporter (via Billboard). "But I get to do the next best thing, which is perform it!"

The Oscars are America's premiere TV award spectacle, and Levine knows he's a bit out of his league amidst the silver screen's finest.

"It's such rarified air that we're gonna be in," Levine said. "As far as being a musician at that particular show, I've always been a huge fan of the Oscars and the way they put it all together. It's the godfather of all awards shows. It's just so far removed from what I do."

Levine worships songwriter Alexander, who used to front The New Radicals. When he heard that the film's music was going to be co-curated by the "You Get What You Give" singer, Levine was pumped.

"Sure enough, from the second I heard the music, I thought, 'OK, yeah, this is exactly what I was expecting: brilliant, awesome, amazing music,'" he said. "It was so great. The minute I heard these songs, I could imagine myself singing them. And it seemed like no one else, in a weird way, was quite as equipped to do this as I was."

The 87th Academy Awards ceremony will be broadcast on ABC beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET on Feb. 22.
