Angel Olsen's Burn Your Fire for No Witness isn't coming out until February 18th, 2014, but she's already releasing a sneak peak at her second single, "Hi-Five." Produced by John Congleton under Jagjaguwar, it's her same trademark vocals, but with the newer guitar sound we heard on the single "Forgiven/Forgotten."
The stripped-down retro drumbeat is accompanied by a distorted electric, emanating feedback that brings us back to the grunge era. Ironically the song title sounds a lot like "hi-fi," when the intentional style of sound has rough, lo-fi edges.
Of the "Hi-Five" lyrics, Olsen says it "could very well be a song about acquiring a little belief, a little trust, despite a lonely attitude. In fact, we are all lonely sometimes - it's not unnatural, it's not unfamiliar, it's not a pity. Sometimes it's good to remind a friend of that."
The lyrics are simultaneously deep and simple: "Are you lonely too? High-five. So am I. All of your life. Stuck inside. I'm stuck, too. I'm stuck with you."
