Nine Inch Nails hasn't had much success with the Best Alternative Album Grammy, so don't look for Trent Reznor to leave Sunday's ceremony with a trophy. However, another Oscar could be in store for the performer: Reznor and his collaborator Atticus Ross announced on Tuesday that they would be teaming up with David Fincher once again, this time to score the director's forthcoming film Gone Girl. The pair won an Oscar for Best Original Score-Motion Picture for their work on The Social Network

The pair have experience with making dark sounding music, and that has suited Fincher's films well, including The Social Network and his previous film, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Film fans can go way back to find Nine Inch Nails' hit "Closer" serving as the opening credit track for Se7en. Gone Girl falls into the same category, telling the story of a husband (Ben Stiller) accused in the disappearance of his wife.

Fans won't have to wait too long to get their hands (or ears) on Reznor and Ross's work. Gone Girl is scheduled for release during October 2014, and the soundtrack will probably be available before that...although a strong point for the pair's work is how well it functions within the action on the screen. There's no doubt that, based on the release date, that Fincher and company are aiming for the Academy's attention. Gone Girl is a safe, early bet for Best Original Score Oscar nomination next year.

The film is based on a novel by Gillian Flynn. Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry will also star.
