Jay Z is backing and promoting his new streaming service, Tidal. The rapper announced plans to perform songs he hasn't performed in years, for a free concert in New York on May 13. The concert is available to Tidal subscribers only.

According to Billboard, in order for Tidal subscribers to attend the rapper's May 13 performance, they will have to submit a playlist on the service in order to win tickets.

This past Sunday, Jay Z took to Twitter to defend the new streaming service under hashtag, #Tidalfacts. The rapper tweeted points like,

"Tidal is doing just fine. We have over 770,000 subs. We have been in business less than one month. #TidalFacts."

The Tidal press conference that included celebrities, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Rihanna and Madonna, drew a lot of attention. Many were skeptical by the star-studded lineup. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Tidal's interim CEO Peter Tonstad, explains why costumers should switch to Tidal for their streaming services.

"The reason is our exclusive content, and that we have a whole spectrum, from up-and-coming artists to the very established, Tonstad told the Wall Street Journal. "It's going to be the content richness, deep-diving into individual artists. It's going to be a combination of content and artist engagement that we put on the platform, or that the artists publish themselves."

In regards to the celebrity presence at the press conference, Tonstad thought it was "absolutely fantastic". The CEO explained that the press conference was not intended to show these celebrities were thinking only about themselves. Rather, their mission is to highlight small and up-and-coming artists and producers.

"...Because the current model turns out to be unsustainable for new artists who don't have distribution, or who don't have any historical revenue streams to live on."

According to Tonstad, Tidal will be launched in more markets.
