Audiophiles will rage for days about what headphone brand truly delivers the best music experience but odds are, unless you really know what you're talking about, you're favorite headphones may be a reflection of what kind of music you enjoy. For example, you wouldn't expect a thrash metal fan to enjoy Beats by Dre, nor would hip-hop listeners fully appreciate the dynamics of your basic Bose. One company thinks it has the answer to please all comers.

Axel Modular is working to develop a headphone line that allows listeners to build their own set depending on what kind of music they listen to. The company's Soundscapes system will offer three different kind of speakers that can be interchanged for different listening experiences: Deep, believe it or not, is the name of the speakers for bass-happy music such as hip-hop and EDM. Pure is the best bet for non-amplified genres such as orchestral and folk, highlighting the depth and colors of the music. Core serves as the best middle-ground for genres that don't necessarily go either way, such as straightforward pop or rock.

The company has developed an app that taps into a potential buyer's listening habits (via Spotify) as to advise on what set of Soundscapes would work best for them. The idea, of course, is to attract customers such as your correspondent, who listen to a variety of genres and will be inclined to buy multiple sets of the speakers to switch out at will.

The project is currently in its Kickstarter phase, but odds are that it will have hit its goal by the time you read this article. At the time of publication, Axel Modular was $200 away from reaching its $180,000 goal. However, you've only got two days from now to get the best deal if the concept interests you: Although the future price of the headphones will be somewhere in the $150-$180 range, $99 pledged will get you a set with your choice of Soundscape.
