Musicworks magazine, Canada's foremost publication for "curious ears," recently picked winners of its 2013 Electronic Music Composition and "Sonic Geography" Writing contests.

San Diego's own Margaret Noble, a true interdisciplinary artist if ever there were one, won the composition laurel for her work Safer is Better. Toronto composer and writer Caitlin Smith, presently based in Austria, garnered first place for her essay "The Blessed Riders of Streetcars in Vienna."

Excerpted from Noble's larger opus Frakture, Safer is Better explores a unique sound world for the composer, echoing the society described in George Orwell's dystopian classic 1984. Frakture has since evolved into an eight-piece audio collage, the first of which is now the award-winning Safer is Better.
