Music Times recently named the soundtrack to Space Jam as one of the most influential '90s music compilations, and now we may have a new film to consider nearly two decades later. A number of actions on behalf of Warner Brothers, involving one NBA superstar LeBron James, suggest that the long-rumored sequel to the Michael Jordan/Looney Toons classic may be soon upon us.

First things first: James has recently made his debut as a film star, essentially playing an extended bit character in Judd Apatow's Trainwreck. The plot revolves around a journalist (Amy Schumer) and a sports physician (Bill Hader) falling in love, while James appears throughout to needle his doc about his personal life. Most of the reviews have been good...and the feedback encouraged Warner to sign James on as a client for future films and TV appearances.

That's one thing, but the next piece of news make it a whole other thing: Warner applied for a trademark on the concept of "Space Jam" during June.

So far there hasn't been any word from any party on the likelihood of a Space Jam sequel in the works, but fans of the animated/live-action classic have to be excited. There's just a little too much coincidence here for our comfort.

This isn't the first time that Space Jam 2 and James' name have been on the tongue's of film fans however. Warner Brothers announced a similar project, even citing James as the star, during early 2014. James denied that he was involved but noted that the original was among his favorite films as a child and he would love to be part of the project. Suspicious. It's a risky proposition either way. Much like Jurassic Park, we can't help but think Hollywood might be better off letting sleeping rabbits lie. Stay tuned for updates.
