A Virigina Tech student running for homecoming queen (and also apparently the face-behind-the-mask for the school's mascot), requested of music label Sub Pop that the band Nirvana send a video shout-out to support her cause. Although Nirvana's Kurt Cobain has been dead for nearly 20 years and the band disbanded as well, Sub Pop decided to grant the unnamed student's wish.

"We received a letter in our mailbag asking Nirvana to send a video to support a campaign bid for homecoming queen," tweeted the record label, noting that the letter requested the band say "What's up Virginia Tech? This is Nirvana! Just wanted to wish you guys a Happy Homecoming Week and good luck at the game this Saturday. LETS GO HOKIES!"

Nirvana put out one record on Sub Pop, and it wasn't the group's legendary "Nevermind," but the label playfully decided to oblige. In the video, four individuals appear as members of the grunge icons. This is already a dead giveaway for anyone who actually knows anything about Nirvana, as the group only had three members. Still, the writer referenced the band as a "her" in the letter, so they probably won't be offended that a female Sup Pop staffer reads most of the message.

The three dudes standing in the background only vaguely look like the real Nirvana, mostly just in hair color. There are some clever details hidden in the video message that will entertain rock fans however. For one, the guy in the middle portraying Kurt Cobain is Mark Arm of the band Mudhoney, a grunge band active at the forefront of the scene (although never found the same popularity as some of the genre's bigger bands). Arm fake strums a guitar throughout, but he does so left-handed, just like Cobain. It's a reference so obscure that there's no way the writer would pick up on it.

As a last bit of humor, the actors onscreen screw with the intended message. Rather than yell "GO HOKIES" as requested, "Nirvana" opts to yell "GO HOAGIES."
