In the grand tradition of the war on sex, drugs and rock n' roll, The Parent's Television Council (PTC) has blasted the VMAs, held this past Sunday (Aug. 30), for their agenda to "stir up controversy without regard to it's impact on an entertainment environment that is increasingly toxic to children." Their criticism of the awards ceremony is as much of a yearly event as the VMAs itself, although this time, Miley Cyrus is swirling at the center of the controversy, as she usually is since her television show, Hannah Montana, ended. Entertainment Weekly reported that her discussion on marijuana and a wardrobe malfunction were to blame for most of the blast.

For those who don't know, the PTC is a censorship advocacy group deeply rooted in Catholicism that was founded by activist L. Brent Bozell III in 1995. It works to ensure that television will conform to their strict advice. The FCC Reports that the PTC is actually the source of most of their complaints received. Obviously, they've never been a fan of either MTV or the VMAs, but president Tim Winter is definitely not a fan of this year's host, who had a peek-a-boo moment backstage when the curtain she was standing behind accidentally revealed her nipple to the audience.

Winter clearly didn't think it was an accident. In his official statement, he said, "Are we surprised that Miley Cyrus exposed herself to millions of viewers, and to people who will inevitably see the news in the mainstream media? About as surprised as we'll be if the sun rises in the east tomorrow morning. We had hoped she would have proven us wrong and demonstrate her considerable talent as a performer, rather than rely on her own sexuality to entertain the audience."

Despite his criticism of the young artist, everyone does seem to be in agreement that Cyrus is emerging into her own as an independent performer.
