Nika Roza Danilova, also known as Zola Jesus, recently shared "Circles," a new track featured on her latest EP Nail. Nail is set to release September 18th. A suitably evocative b-side to "Nail," the fourth single from her fifth full length Taiga, "Circles" adheres to its namesake with atmospheric instrumentation and dark lyricism. Released on the heels of the debut of "Nail," Zola Jesus' latest will easily keep fans smitten via brooding vocals and relatable emotives. Similar to earlier cuts like "I Can't Stand" and "Night," "Circles" brings to mind the vocal finesse of post-punk greats like Siouxsie Sioux or goth folk starlet Chelsea Wolfe.
Opening with pulsating drums and crisp diction, Zola Jesus' latest release captivates listeners at an instant with vocals that effortlessly bleed into the song's orchestration. In a fashion reminiscent of an echo, the structure of Nail's accompanying b-side embodies its namesake, crafted in a cyclical manner that manages to avoid mere repetition. Seamlessly bridging the gap between electro, industrial, and baroque pop, the Arizona native's approach towards songwriting is distinguishably dark yet cathartic for listeners fond of existential thematics and memorable backbeats.
It has yet to be determined if an accompanying music video will be produced for "Circles." In the meantime, fans can seek solace in the video for "Nail" which captures Danilova singing in a sensory deprivation bed. Embodying the thematic weight of the songs featured on her forthcoming EP, Zola Jesus continues to consistently craft ballads that are simultaneously eerie and beautiful. Devout fans in select cities in the U.S. and abroad will get the chance to hear Taiga's singles as well as its b-sides live this fall.
