The Voice can go in to its ninth season premiere tonight (Sept. 21) with a good lead in - a new Emmy award. On Sunday night, the long-running NBC reality show took how the award for outstanding reality competition program, besting out The Amazing Race, Top Chef and other massive shows in its genre.

In the ceremony hosted by Andy Samberg, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, The Voice won its third Emmy in the outstanding reality competition program category. The competition for the 2015 award was stiff. In addition to Top Chef and The Amazing Race, hit shows such as Project Runway, Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance were also up for the award.

Though The Voice's superstar judges Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Pharrell Williams were not in attendance at the Emmys, show creator Mark Burnett and The Voice's forever host Carson Daly were on hand to accept the coveted trophy. In his acceptance speech, Burnett apologized to The Amazing Race for winning out.

The Amazing Race has previously all but swept this category - winning 10 times and being nominated consistently every year since the category's inception in 2003.

Shelton later tweeted his support for The Voice:

This is The Voice's second win for outstanding reality competition program and its third Emmy overall.

The ninth season of The Voice will premiere tonight (Sept. 21) on NBC at 8 p.m.
