According to W Magazine, Drake claims to have been kicked off the television drama Degrassi for focussing too much on his Hip-Hop career. He felt he was forced to choose between music and acting, and evidently, he chose music. Drake explained, "That was part of the reason I was kicked off the show. Back then, I'd spend a full day on set and then go to the studio to make music until 4 or 5 a.m. I'd sleep in my dressing room and then be in front of the cameras again by 9 a.m. Eventually, they realized I was juggling two professions and told me I had to choose. I chose this life."

However, in a recent interview with Buzzfeed, Degrassi producer and co-creater Linda Schuyler took issue with Drake's recollection of events. Schuyler claims that the show was aware of his desire to achieve musical success, and even assisted him in the process. She said, "I'm hoping there was just some miscommunication here, because if that's the perception nothing could make me sadder. Not only did we know [about Drake's Hip-Hop career], we helped him with it."

Drake has been in the news frequently as of late, regarding his beef with Meek Mill, his desire to continue acting, and his conflicts with Chris Brown. However, this has not stopped him from releasing a string of hits that firmly place him at the top of his game. Many thought his Degrassi days were behind him, and did not expect the popular Hip-Hop artist to lob criticism at the show. This may have been an attempt to distance himself from his earlier acting in order to shape his future acting career. Whatever the case, Drake feels slighted by his previous avenue to fame, and seems to want to move forward in his career.
