German house and techno don Loco Dice, born Yassine Ben Achour, has released his first album in seven years, Underground Sound Suicide. The LP has features from Chris Liebing, Just Blaze, Miss Kitten, JAW and more.
Underground Sound Suicide takes a new approach to his music. There are still the gritty, driving techno tracks that deliver peak-time moments in his marathon sets and represent the streets of Dusseldorf that Achour comes from, however in the album format he had license to explore into different styles and sounds. USS is equipped with plenty of pulsating beats and ambient textures, such as the soft and soothing opening "Leavin' Brooklyn" that sounds perfect for a late night coming home from clubbing in BK as the sun slowly spreads its golden beams of light over the horizon.
Making this album, Dice talked a lot about the influence of hip-hop on his work and it is clearly seen in USS, with rappers making an appearance and additional production from Just Blaze on "Sending This One Out."
"There have been so many rapid changes happening around me since my first album: new technologies, an omnipresent faster and faster internet, increased surveillance, new styles, new music, mp3 was no longer a dirty term, our scene has been in a state of flux, the wall between underground and mainstream became porous... all the dots connected, and my studio jam sessions became the soundtracks to these new scenarios," said Dice about the progression of his music from his last album 7 Dunham Place.
