Foo Fighters have been teasing something mysterious for the past month or so on their official website, and now, we finally know what that is. The band has released a surprise free five-song EP titled Saint Cecilia EP, in tribute to the victims of the Paris terror attacks.

The new EP was originally planned for a release in conjunction with the end of the band's extensive world tour that was launched support of their latest LP, Sonic Highways, which had also paired with an HBO docuseries of the same name. During the tour, which frontman Dave Grohl was in a full leg cast for most of, the band performed with just about every high-profile music celebrity (oh, and let's not forget Grohl's doctor).

After the horrifying terrorist attacks in Paris, Grohl and the band were forced to cancel the rest of their European tour. Thus, the band decided to shift gears and dedicate the album to the innocent victims and their friends and families. In a press release, the frontman penned an extensive letter in regards to the project, as well as its predecessor, Sonic Highways.

"This project has now taken on an entirely different tone. As has everything, it seems..." Grohl wrote. "There is a new, hopeful intention that, even in the smallest way, perhaps these songs can bring a little light into this sometimes dark world. To remind us that music is life, and that hope and healing go hand in hand with song. That much can never be taken away.

"To all who were affected by the atrocities in Paris, loved ones and friends, our hearts go out to you and your families. We will return and celebrate life and love with you once again someday with our music. As it should be done."

He then elaborated further on Sonic Highways, citing their 2013 show at Foro Sol stadium in Mexico City as the source of funding and support for the project. "Unbeknownst to them, the people who attended those two concerts back in December 2013 at Foro Sol stadium helped fund the filming and recording of the bulk of the Sonic Highways project," he said. "They were the fuse that lit this little firecracker, baby." You can read the entirety of Grohl's statement, as well as download and/or stream the new EP for free via the band's official website.
