Pharrell and Missy Elliott are both friends of The Voice - the former is a three-season coach and the latter was a guest mentor during the battle rounds. On Tuesday night (Dec. 15), the friends and frequent collaborators took the show's live finale stage by storm with an elaborately produced performance of their new single "WTF (Where They From)."

Though both Pharrell and Elliott originally hail from Virginia, the stage took on a New York City theme, complete with two graffiti-laden subway cars, a turnstile and bench to sit on while you wait for a train. Pharrell and Elliott originally kicked off their performance from inside the subway cars but eventually came center stage with a heavy dance routine backed by about a dozen hip-hop dancers.

The staging and dancing seems to have been the top priority for the duo, who definitely weren't rapping live for "WTF." The backing track was barely disguised and both Elliott and Pharrell clearly missed a few cues to pick their mics back up. Both of these performers have a solid live presence, so why they decided to eschew an actual performance for theatrics remains a mystery.

But, hey, at least the puppets are cool!

Pharrell and Missy Elliott were just one of a few acts to perform on the season 9 live finale of The Voice. Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Coldplay, Sam Hunt and more also took the stage. Of course, the show also crowned a winner in Team Adam's Christian pop singer Jordan Smith.
