Courtney Barnett, who was recently nominated for the Best New Artist prize at next year's Grammy Awards, has stated in a new interview that she has no idea who fellow Grammy nominees James Bay and Meghan Trainor are.

Joining Barnett, Bay and the "All About That Bass" pop luminary Trainor at the 2016 Grammys on Feb. 15, are Sam Hunt and Tori Kelly on the Best New Artist shortlist.

Speaking to Billboard, Barnett expressed her lack of knowledge for her running mates. "I don't know who they are," the Australian singer-songwriter stated. "I probably won't [check them out]. I listen to music when my friends recommend it to me, I don't often just go out and buy a record because it was in a magazine or it was on a list or something. So, yeah, I probably won't. I feel like there's so much music in the world that I haven't listened to yet that I want to listen to."

She further described how she circulates a few albums that she likes but ultimately she lives in her own sort of "bubble" and doesn't keep up with most new music. "I just do my own thing," she added. "I'm not so concerned about what everyone else is doing and what the trend is."

Barnett also stated that despite her gratitude and surprise, she was never necessarily looking to get nominated in the first place. "I'm sure there are millions of other artists that I respect that have won Grammys, maybe. I don't know, I've never followed the Grammys, I don't know. But it's just nice to have that recognition on such a huge international scale."

As far as who Barnett believes is deserving of the nomination, the artist specifically mentions previous touring partners Sharon Van Etten and Benjamin Booker. "I don't even know what new artist means," she added. "I've been listening to Sleater-Kinney and, like, it's new to me but they're obviously not a new band."

Barnett's most excellent debut album Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit was released in March of this year, and is currently available for purchase, as well as streaming, via most platforms.
