David Bowie was one of the earliest fans of Arcade Fire, and now the band has returned the support in kind. Following the shocking news of the rock icon's death on Sunday (Jan. 10), Win Butler and co. released a touching statement on Bowie's impact on their music and his legacy.

"David Bowie was one of the band's earliest supporters and champions," the group said in a statement to Rolling Stone. "He not only created the world that made it possible for our band to exist, he welcomed us into it with grace and warmth. We will take to the grave the moments we shared; talking, playing music and collaborating as some of the most profound and memorable moments of our lives. A true artist even in his passing, the world is more bright and mysterious because of him, and we will continue to shout prayers into the atmosphere he created."

In addition to the touching statement, Butler's Instagram has been an ode to Bowie as he shared memories and collaborations the band embarked on with Bowie over the last decade.

Goodbye friend. So many tears, and so lucky to have passed in the same solar system.

Bowie famously was a famous early supporter of Arcade Fire, buying dozens of copies of the band's debut album and handing them out to friends. As Consequence of Sound pointed out yesterday, one of the "Lazarus" singer's final live performances was alongside Arcade Fire in 2005, performing the Funeral standout "Wake Up."

Bowie also notably provided backing vocals on Arcade Fire's most recent album, Reflektor. His vocals can be heard most prominently on the album's title track. Beyond that, his influence can be heard all throughout the dance-heavy rock album.

Bowie passed away on Sunday after a secretive 18-month battle with cancer. He had turned 69 just two days before, on Jan. 8.
