Well, it happened, and it was just as hysterical as we were hoping. And yes, there was a cowbell involved...

On last night's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, comedic actor Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith finally came together for that much talked about drum battle the two have been exchanging words over since February.

Talk of the drum off began when Ferrell challenged the musician to go drumstick to drumstick for charity, with him playing for Cancer For College and Smith for Little Kids Rock.

After each took to their assigned drum sets – dressed identically in their Kiss Destroyer t-shirts – The Tonight Show host began the battle by explaining the rules, calling for a "traditional drum off" with both participants having four solos apiece and the winner being the one who "whacks, smacks and slaps the skins best."

Ferrell kicked it off after Smith dished some light trash talk, stating, "Ladies first."

In fact, much of the highlights of the night, aside from Smith's flawless skills and Will Ferrell just being Will Ferrell, were the exchanges in between sets. "Looks like baby learned how to play the drums..." joked Ferrell. "Do you play for the Luke Warm Chili Peppers?"

In the end, perhaps feeling the weight of defeat on his shoulders, the Anchorman star decided to pull out his secret weapon – the cowbell. Joined by the Red Hot Chili Peppers (a surprise appearance), Ferrell reenacted his famed Saturday Night Live "cowbell" sketch, playing along to Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear the Reaper.

It appears Fallon took this as an instant win, donning his pal with the Golden Cowbell.
