Zayn Malik has spoken out in multiple interviews explaining his decision to leave his former band One Direction, who are currently on an indefinite hiatus as well. In a new interview with Beats 1 on Apple Music with Zane Lowe, he again talks about leaving One Direction. The interview will be streamed in it’s entirety at 12 p.m. Eastern time on Beats 1 and on video via Apple Music, but yesterday a clip was released early.

“I think I always kind of wanted to go,” Malik said to Lowe in the interview, as reported by Billboard. “From like the first year really, I never really wanted to be there in the band. I just gave it a go because it was there at the time and then when I realized the direction we were going in with the music, I instantly realized it wasn’t for me because I realized I couldn’t put any input in; I couldn’t give my opinion on this or that because it didn’t fit the grain of what we were as a band or what we represented."  He added that was when he began getting frustrated, explaining, "So that’s when it became frustrating for me, that’s when I had to be like, 'I’ve got to start thinking about myself.'”

In the 3-minute interview clip, Malik and Lowe sit in a stadium or arena as they talk about Malik's time with the band and eventual decision to leave.  You can view the preview on Apple Music whether or not you are a member of the streaming service.

While the band is on an indefinite hiatus, One Direction recently released their video “History,” which chronicles their five-year run in the music industry. It begins with their crushing loss on the U.K. version of The X Factor and also includes intimate footage of the group throughout their career in black and white shots. The footage shows the band traveling, telling jokes, goofing around backstage and even has shots of their large-scale stadium shows. It remains to be seen whether or not One Direction will return, although they have assured fans that their hiatus isn’t permanent.
