As previously reported, Dave Grohl is heading up a new TV series on HBO based on his Sound City documentary. The upcoming series has now been given an official title: Sonic Highways.

Grohl has shared a teaser trailer where he explains the title's meaning and the basic point of the series. He believes you can "tie all these people and places together with these sonic highways. This is a musical map of America."

As Consequence of Sound points out (via Classic Rock Magazine), some of the featured studios are Steve Albini's Electrical Audio in Chicago; Rancho de Luna in California; and Washington, D.C.'s Inner Ear Studios. Each episode features interviews with artists who recorded in the respective studio including Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi), Paul Stanley (KISS), Joe Walsh (The Eagles), and Nancy Wilson (Heart).

Grohl told Billboard recently that Sonic Highways explores the musical culture behind each studio's city. "It's basically the history of American music broken down to the cultural roots of each place," he told them. "Why did Chicago become a blues capital? Why did country go to Nashville? Why did the first psychedelic band, Thirteenth Floor Elevators, come from Austin? How did the second line rhythm make its way to New Orleans? It's crazy."

As CoS notes, Grohl is not only directing the series but also booking all of the interviews.
