In a big label acquisition, Sony Music UK has bought one of the largest independent labels in the UK, Ministry of Sound. The dance music imprint was founded in 1993 and sold over 70 million albums, including 40 No. 1 UK albums and 21 No. 1 singles.

It has helped launch the careers of the likes of Eric Prydz, Wretch 32 and Example. It's current roster boasts acts like Sigala, DJ Fresh and London Grammar, a departure from the traditional dance music sound on the label.

"I'm delighted we have found the right home to grow Ministry of Sound Recordings at a global level while keeping its unique identity," said Johan Presencer, Ministry of Sound Group Chief Executive in a statement. "Sony Music is a world-class company that understands our ethos of exceptional curation and developing young talent. Ministry of Sound Recordings had its most successful year to date in 2015. Sony has the scale and strength within the industry to project our artists and music onto an even bigger platform."

Ministry Of Sound also grew to fame in 1990s as the leading maker of dance compilation in the UK. They have sold one in six compilations in the UK since the label was formed.

Exact details of the acquisition have not been announced, but it will align Ministry of Sound's artists with some of the major players found on Sony Music.

"Ministry of Sound is one of the greatest brands in music. I'm delighted to welcome one of the most innovative, smart and pioneering labels to the Sony Music family," said Jason Iley, Chairman and CEO, Sony Music UK. "David and Dipesh's track record, alongside one of the best curation teams in the business, speaks for itself and the label will be another hugely exciting addition to Sony Music UK's vision for the future."
