Daft Punk's booked performance on last night's (Aug. 6) episode of "The Colbert Report" did not go quite as planned, apparently. When the show opened last night, Stephen Colbert announced that despite being booked, the French electronic duo were not able to appear on the lampooning news show, because Viacom sister network MTV had booked Daft Punk to perform in a "secret" performance at the 2013 VMAs.

"Here's the story: it's a true story. We booked click and clack over here about a month ago. This network is owned by Viacom, which is also the owner of MTV... Apparently, Daft Punk are going to make a surprise appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards. Don't tell anyone, because fun fact: no one told me until two hours ago," Colbert explained at the top of the show.

Because he had to deliver the Daft Punk hit "Get Lucky" regardless, Colbert danced along to the song with a variety of former guests and celebrity friends, including Ashton Kutcher, Hugh Laurie, Henry Kissinger, the cast of "Breaking Bad" and Matt Damon. Of course, Colbert also strutted his stuff with "Late Night" host Jimmy Fallon, clearing up last week's mysterious cameo once and for all.

Apparently, as a part of his contract with Hyundai, Colbert had to deliver some song of the summer on his TV show. Who else was there to save him except "Blurred Lines" singer Robin Thicke, who gave a stellar performance of his No. 1 hit single to conclude the bizarre show.

Though Viacom and Colbert will likely not admit it, the Daft Punk "appearance" on "The Colbert Report" was likely a publicity stunt to announce the band's VMA performance all along and pull some of Colbert's audience to the annual MTV award show.

If Daft Punk are to "Get Lucky" at the VMAs, they'll join Lady Gaga and Kanye West on stage at the Brooklyn Barclays Center. The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards will take place on Aug. 25 at 9 p.m.
