A Tribe Called Quest has released their new album We Got it From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service. The album was recorded prior to Phife Dawg’s death from diabetes this past March.

The album features the original group lineup, with guest appearances from Kanye West, Andre 3000, Anderson .Paak, and Busta Rhymes. The album has the classic NYC sound that fans have come to know and love, with energetic rapping to carry it through.

In the wake of the presidential election, some fans wondered if the last track on the album, entitled “The Donald,” was about Trump. According to SPIN, the song is actually about the late Phife Dog, whose nickname was “Don Juice.”

All the contributions on the album took place at Q-Tip’s recording studio in New Jersey.

Consequence also did an interview with Complex prior to the album release where he described working with West, saying, “I flew out to L.A. to work with ‘Ye on it. Me and Tip discussed it, because of me and ‘Ye’s history. “[Tribe] was the last thing we belled on when we met as far as me and Kanye is concerned. That’s why he initially moved to New York; he wanted to work with me.”

“It took a couple trips,” he further said. “And Kanye did actually come to Tip’s studio and they got it in. They all got it in. I took one more trip out to ‘Ye and then we got it done.”

In the past, West has described A Tribe Called Quest as being an important influence on his music. He also gave a speech during Phife Dawg’s memorial ceremony at the Apollo Theater this past April.
