In addition to her gig as a judge on The Voice, Miley Cyrus is going back to the basics and releasing a new song, “Malibu,” as early as May 11.

In a cover story with Billboard, Cyrus gave her thoughts on the single, christened “Malibu” after the beach community in California where she currently lives. According to Cyrus, the song was penned on the way to a taping of The Voice.

“I drive myself everywhere, but that day I decided to Uber,” she said. “I was trying not to sing out loud because someone else was in the car.”

Cyrus lists the new song as being “controversial in its sweetness,” and writer John Norris called it “gimmick-free pop-rock unlike anything she has recorded before.” The single also has connections to her newfound relationship with Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth.

“They’re going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam,” Cyrus said in the interview. “So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, ‘This is how I feel’?” The two ended their engagement in 2013 and reconnected in early 2016, with Cyrus admitting that they needed to “refall for each other.”

After their breakup in 2013, Cyrus says that she was “so immersed in work” at the time in order to find herself. “I needed to change so much. And changing with someone else not changing like that is too hard,” she reflected in the interview. “Suddenly you’re like, ‘I don’t recognize you anymore.’ We had to refall for each other.”

According to People, Cyrus and Hemsworth are currently living together in Malibu and share seven dogs, two pigs and two miniature horses. Hemsworth reportedly bought the home in 2014 after the split, but Cyrus moved in after they rekindled the romance. The home is also the location of Rainbow Land, the bohemian style recording studio where Cyrus is recording her sixth studio album.
