Keira Knightley recently explained why she prefers to star in historical films and not so much in modern ones.
The actress said that this is because female characters in modern films typically get raped.

The actress also said that she does not always approve of how women are portrayed in modern films. On the contrary, she learns a lot of things when she takes on the role of a character living in previous eras. However, Knightley does not generalize all modern films.
"There's been some improvement. I'm suddenly being sent scripts with present-day women who aren't raped in the first five pages and aren't simply there to be the loving girlfriend and wife," said Knightley.
Her Thoughts On Hollywood's Sexual Assault Scandals
The Love Actually star was also asked to comment on the harassment scandals in Hollywood, and she said that the issue is not only restricted to famous people. Knightley feels very fortunate that she did not experience abuse or assault, both in her professional and personal life.
"I think everyone has battled their fair share of monsters. It's not just actresses. It's teachers; it's lawyers. I'm not talking about rape, but I'm talking about the people who had been grabbed in pubs or their breasts had been fondled by someone they didn't know or they'd had someone shove a hand up their skirt," said the actress.
For the past couple of years, Knightley said that women thought these actions were normal, that's why they did not speak up. However, several new movements have encouraged people to open up about their experiences with sexual harassment and abuse.
James Franco Struggles Amid Recent Accusations
A slew of Hollywood actors and executives have also been accused of sexual misconduct. Some of them denied the allegations, while others apologized for their deeds. James Franco is the latest actor to be plagued with sexual abuse allegations. Five women accused him of inappropriate or sexually exploitative behavior.
The Disaster Artist star has denied all allegations, but a source recently revealed that the actor is "struggling" due to the recent events. Franco was also criticized for wearing the Time's Up pin at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards when he himself allegedly exploited his former students.
