Timing couldn't be any worse for Meek Mill

The MMG rapper's lawyer filed a petition Thursday (July 17) but despite an attempt for an early release, Meek remains in jail following his three to six month sentence.

In the motion filed, the MMG rapper's representative argues that his client was wrongfully taken into custody, Vibe magazine reports.

Meek's lawyer says the rapper had not committed any new offenses and was not given a hearing to state his defense.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, a judge responded that a hearing will not be possible until September.

As previously reported, the Philly rapper was sentenced to jail time for violating his probation. A judge sited Meek's posting to his social networks and missing probation appointments.

Along with the petition for early release was a letter from Meek's parent label Atlantic Records. In the letter, the label states that his jail time is detrimental to his upcoming album release.

"If the artist is unable to promote his album release, thousands of fans will be disappointed and potentially turn their interest to other artists which could prove devastating to this artist's career and damaging to those who have worked and hoped to continue working with him over the course of that career," the letter said.

Last week, Music Times reported MMG head honcho Rick Ross issued a statement on Meek's legal troubles.

Ross vowed to try and keep Meek's album release on schedule saying, "I created MMG years ago, my desire was to create a space where the most talented artists in the world could be nurtured and supported. With that came a commitment. I vowed to support these artists, through the good and the bad. Every individual signed to MMG is not just an artist, they are my family. And with family you ride, or you die. Yesterday, my brother, Meek Mill ran into some unfortunate legal issues. It happens. However, his team, our team, will continue to execute Meek's plan as close to schedule as possible."

Meek Mill's Dreams Worth More Than Money album is slated to drop on Sept. 9.
