Who Runs Detroit? 42 Dugg, Apparently

In an interview with Hot New Hip Hop, the Detroit-native recalls his difficult life growing up. The rapper has been locked up for six years, spending significant time in correctional facilities. While in solitary confinement, 42 Dugg, whose real name is Dion Hayes, realized rap is his way out.

Taking up the name 42 Dugg, Hayes signed a combination deal with Yo Gotti and Lil Baby. He is currently a talent under both Collective Music Group and 4 Pockets Full labels. His first mixtape, "Young and Turnt," peaked at the 19th spot on Billboard's Indie Albums Charts. A month later, he released his follow-up "Young & Turnt, Vol 2" to even greater success. "Y&T2" broke into the top 10, peaking at No. 9 of the Indie Albums Charts.

In the exclusive interview, he claims to be running Detroit, with a steady stream of its own distinct music. As a signee for two record labels, he described at as coming "together two different ways but it's real organic." He then shared how he met Lil Baby, then Yo Gotti, and how these two hip-hop artists signed him on their respective labels.

Among his popular collaborations with Lil Baby, who he considers a brother, include "Grace" and "We Paid." With Yo Gotti, Dugg has appeared in the 2019 track "You Da One."

Never Forget Nell and Reese

The interview also touched on a small quirk in his singles. In "Grace," he mentions Nell and Reese. The same names appear in his single "Hard Times." Dugg explained to HNHH correspondent Alex Zidel that Nell and Reese are brothers who are his uncles.

Nell was sentenced for life, and Reese died. During Grace's first verse, Dugg does rap "Free Nell still, ni**a, RIP Reese." He added that Nell, while in jail, still listens to music. His shout outs to his uncles are his way of letting Uncle Nell know that he does not forget about them and that he does the best he can.

"Been Turnt"

Speaking from experience, 42 Dugg expresses his wide understanding on tracks such as "Been Turnt." When asked how he gets back to "the zone" and relives the emotions he had, the Detroit rapper explained that he's just trying to be energetic. He also makes a point to tell that he has been there."

Earlier this year, on March 10, Dion Hayes was arrested for federal gun charges. He was released after seven days on March 17. The following day, he took to Instagram to let his fans know. "We back man," the rapper says to the camera.
