Taylor Swift and Kanye West were up against each other with disses, apologies, and "shots fired" lyrics that lasted a decade long. This is a timeline of the first feud between the two artists that only got worse as the years go by.
September 2009: West Interrupts Swift but He Apologizes Twice
The Swift-West started when Kanye West went up the stage, snagged the mic from Taylor Swift, and announced: "Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you. I'mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!"
This was when Swift wins Best Female Video Award for her song "You Belong With Me" at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
Later that night, West wrote an apology for the abrupt intrusion on his blog.
In an interview on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, the billionaire rapper admitted he was wrong while wiping the tears on his eyes. He acknowledged that the situation was terrible and that he was rude to have stepped on Swift's feelings. West was willing to apologize in person.
September 2010: Swift "Accepts" West's Apology in Song "Innocent"
On the same even a year later, Taylor Swift performed the debut for her song "Innocent." The lyrics in the song mentions about how "life is a tough crowd" and how a 32-year old someone is still "growing." While the country-pop singer is performing, clips of West (32 at that time) interrupting her were played on the background.
June 2013: West Regrets Nothing
In an interview with New York Times, Kanye West mentioned that he did not regret anything. He believes that his instinct, including that time when he interrupted Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards, has only led him to "complete awesomeness" and "awesome truth." "If anyone's reading this waiting for some type of full-on flat apology for anything, they should stop reading right now," he added.
February 2015: West Swift Hug It Out
It appears that what Kanye West in that interview did not matter much. That is because the billionaire rapper is seen making peace and taking pictures with Taylor Swift at the 57th Grammy Awards. On top of that, there were speculations that the two artists are going to collaborate. West was not against it, saying that he does not discriminate music and that Swift expressed working on the studio with him.
April 2015: Swift and West Collaborating
Taylor Swift confirms the collaboration with Kanye West is happening in an interview with ET. The country-pop singer compliments the rapper for having tons of ideas she finds impressive. She added that West was just spouting one idea after another and that they talked about other things as well. The "Blank Space" singer said that she "completely respects" West as a producer.
August 2015: Swift Honors West
Swift presents West with the Video Vanguard Award at the 2015 MTV's Video Music Awards. The country-pop singer acknowledges the billionaire rapper for his contribution to music, fashion, and life in general. She even added the infamous line "I'm happy for you, and I'm let you finish, but Kanye West has had one of the most remarkable careers of all time."
Musicians and fans thought this was the end of the Swift-West feud, but they were not prepared for what the two had in store.
