Johnny Depp has resumed public appearances after his headline-making defamation court battle with ex-girlfriend Amber Heard. On Sunday, the "Willy Wonka" actor made a brief appearance at the 2022 Video Music Awards.
This was hailed as his "big comeback" by some for quite some time now, but when it finally happened - many felt disappointed and shortchanged. Some thought he was making a mockery of them all, even.
The actor's visage was projected into the helmet of a hovering moon figure above the stage. "Guess who?" Depp wrote on Instagram, posting the moment to his account.
Depp's face appeared multiple times throughout the show.
"VMAs let's get back to the fucking music, shall we," he said at one point from the suit.
A source told the New York Post earlier in the week that Depp was "very enthusiastic" and "ready to make his comeback" regarding his presence at the awards presentation.
According to the publication, he was also planning to dress as a moon person. Given that his face alone stole the stage, calling it a "comeback" now seems a great exaggeration.

Depp has been a mainstay at the MTV Movie Awards, where he got the MTV Generation Award in 2012.
In the "Pirates of the Caribbean movie, "he received multiple honors for his portrayal as Jack Sparrow.
In June, a jury determined that Heard defamed Depp in his civil suit against his ex-girlfriend. Depp was granted $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages after prevailing on all three counts.
The actress was granted $2 million for winning one of three claims in the countersuit against her ex-husband.
Depp filed a lawsuit against the 36-year-old actress in response to an opinion article she published for the Washington Post in 2018 on sexual violence. The actor said he lost tens of millions of dollars as a result of the article's abuse charges.
As a result of the unanimous verdict in favor of Johnny, Heard was ultimately compelled to pay him $15 million in damages. Since then, the "Aquaman" actress has filed an appeal, arguing that the evidence did not support the final decision. While Heard continues to battle against the verdict, it appears that Depp has already moved on.
