The rock music community has flocked to social media to mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest-serving monarch, who passed away at the age of 96.

The announcement was made in a brief statement from Buckingham Palace "This afternoon, the Queen died peacefully at Balmoral. This evening, the King and Queen Consort will remain in Balmoral and will travel to London tomorrow."

King Charles III issued a statement in which he said "The passing of my cherished mother, Her Majesty the Queen, is a time of profound sorrow for me and my entire family. We deeply lament the demise of a revered monarch and a beloved mother."

Many performers, including Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Ozzy Osbourne, and Geezer Butler, paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.

Sir Paul McCartney was a longstanding admirer and close friend of Queen Elizabeth II, who knighted him in Buckingham Palace at the age of 54 in 1997.

Twenty years later, he was named an Honor Companion. Following her passing on Thursday, McCartney paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on Instagram with a black-and-white image.

His public ties to the king extend back to June 1953, when he won a school essay contest prior to the coronation of the monarch.

Mick Jagger's link to Queen Elizabeth has not been as pleasant though. But still he took the time to pay tribute to the great monarch.

Queen Elizabeth herself was among those who said Jagger shouldn't have been such a fortunate boy to have his own cone. It was rumored that the Queen was extremely dissatisfied with Jagger's knighthood.

Queen Elizabeth II reportedly responded to Jagger's initial decision with two words: "not fit." This objection was prompted by Tony Blair's obsession on pushing his concept of "Cool Britannia" to its furthest.

In addition to being a prominent advocate for the underbelly of society, Jagger had publicly spoken out against the monarchy and even referred to Her Royal Highness as "chief witch."

It was sufficient to put the Queen on alert. While the Queen was scheduled for surgery at the time of the ceremony, rumors circulated that she intentionally skipped the event to avoid Jagger.

This information was disclosed in the 2012 unofficial biography Mick: The Wild Life and Mad Genius of Jagger. In his book, Christopher Andersen describes a royal advisor as saying, "There was just no way that [Queen Elizabeth] would participate in that." But there was one more rumored cause for Jagger's expulsion by the Queen.

According to rumours, Jagger had a romance with Princess Margaret, the sister of Queen Elizabeth. Jagger was reportedly a member of the Queen's sister's social circle, dining with her and enjoying her company. There have always been rumors that Margaret and Mick had an affair.

But he could have really let bygones be bygones.
