Emma Stone could be heading to Broadway stages soon, an announcement that will excite fans of the Spiderman actress and raise a wary eyebrow among those more familiar with the Great White Way. The actress will possibly step into one of the lead roles for the musical Cabaret, according to a statement from the Roundabout Theatre Company on Monday.
This will induce a feeling of deja vu to some. Stone was in talks to appear as Sally Bowles, a British vocalist who performs at the titular nightclub. Stone was set to appear in the show during 2013 but later left the staging due to scheduling issues. Michelle Williams (the actress, not the former Destiny's Child member and fellow stage actress) stepped into the role following Stone's departure, appearing beside fellow lead Alan Cumming. Williams will continue in the role until at least November 9.
Stone has never appeared in a film or mainstream stage role that involve her singing, but she does have some television reality show experience. During 2004, three years before she would make a name for herself in Superbad, high schooler Stone appeared on VH1's The New Partridge Family and proved her vocal abilities by performing Pat Benatar's "We Belong" and Meredith Brooks' "Bitch." The actress won a role on the show but it was never picked up for production.
Cabaret debuted on Broadway during 1966 and came to national prominence as a film during 1972. Liza Minnelli starred as Sally in the film, still probably her most famous role.
