Songs by Katy Perry and Kesha were released years ago, yet they are currently causing controversy.

Following the premiere of the Netflix show "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,"social media users are criticizing the two popstars for songs that alluded to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Katy Perry's song "Dark Horse," published in 2013, and Kesha's song "Cannibal," released in 2010, both made reference to the crime.

"I'll pull a Jeffrey Dahmer," Kesha sings, while Juicy J, who appears on Katy Perry's "Dark Horse," raps, "She chews your heart out like Jeffrey Dahmer."

The words of the songs are being called into question, and the performers are being described as insensitive, rude, terrible, and even vile as a result of the lyrics.

"Why isn't anyone calling out Katy Perry for allowing such a horrible & disgusting phrase to be featured in one of her successful songs?" one user wondered.

"Jeffrey was a renowned serial murderer, and Katy CHOSE to romanticize his illegal and horrible crimes, making me sick to my stomach. She NEEDS to apologize," they wrote.

Another Twitter user stated that they only recently learned about Jeffrey Dahmer and thought his name was recognizable since Kesha included it in her song.

"I need to remove that music right now," they said on Twitter. "Why do we give these sickos fandom? Of course, Netflix produces a show about it."

However, some social media users suggested that the Twitter users attacking the songs are doing so just so they remain relevant.

"Really strange that you're so young that the only reason you know who Jeffrey Dahmer is because of this Netflix series, and now you want to be relevant by expressing how disgusting songs from 10 years ago are. Sorry snowflakes, it's too late for that."

Some social media users expressed pity for Jeffrey Dahmer's victims, claiming that forcing young children to recite his name on a Katy Perry song was sick.
