Machine Gun Kelly might have amassed massive success during his pop-punk era, but he clarified one thing that the mainstream media always says about his genre of music.

The singer began his career in rap music, his fame skyrocketed after being featured on MTV2's "Sucker Free Freestyle" where he rapped verses from his song "Chip off the Block."

Since then, he released numerous albums like "Lace Up," "Bloom," "General Admission," and his most popular rap project "Hotel Diablo."

In 2020, many were shocked as the Houston-born artist seemingly switched genres with his album "Tickets to My Downfall" as he started embodying the pop-punk aesthetic and sound, which is vastly different from his rapper persona.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, MGK clarified one thing, saying he never really took a break from rap music in favor of his pop-punk eras.

"I never departed, left or switched [genres]. Because in the same year I was the most-viewed YouTube video putter-outer with all rap, which was my lockdown sessions, which gained more views than almost any of my other videos," he told the outlet. (via Billboard)

Machine Gun Kelly Reveals Why He Stopped Doing Interviews

Elsewhere in the conversation, the "emo girl" hitmaker explained that most of the time, media outlets would discredit his career in rap music, he also insisted that he works tirelessly for his songs.

During the beginning of the pandemic when everyone was stuck at home, MGK said he worked hard and rapped his "a** off" every week.

Then when he released his number 1 album, the media claimed he "departed" from rap music and "switched" genres."

It was also the main reason why he stopped doing interviews with most media outlets because he's tired of being asked questions that don't make him think.

"I've just sat there and heard this, 'Oh, he departed, oh, he switched,'" he noted.

Regarding making millions of dollars, the rapper clarified that he never really cared about money, in fact, he claims that he never looked at his bank account because he could care less.

All he cares about right now is "real human interaction."

For fans who are waiting for his return to rap music, it appears that a new project is coming soon as confirmed in a previous interview with Audacy Music, saying he will "step into" where he left "Hotel Diablo" after his plans and tour this year.
