Christine McVie, who served as Fleetwood Mac's singer and keyboardist, has died. She was 79.

McVie's family confirmed her death in a post on Instagram, saying that the singer passed away on Wednesday at a hospital. The same post divulged that she died following a short illness, but her family did not drop further details about Christine McVie's cause of death.

"She was in the company of her family. We kindly ask that you respect the family's privacy at this extremely painful time, and we would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being and revered musician who was loved universally," the message went on.

Meanwhile, Fleetwood Mac's social media pages, including Twitter, shared similar saddening news with fans. According to the band, the late singer and keyboardist was the best musician who could be part of any band. It also noted how she was not only a bandmate but a family and best friend to everyone.

Fleetwood Mac expressed their heartbreak, saying the singer would be very missed.

McVie's fans and colleagues shared photos of her online and penned heartfelt tributes to the musician.

Christine McVie's Career Before Her Death

The early days of McVie's career focused on her frequent collaborations with several musicians, including Spencer Davis, Stan Webb, and Andy Silvester. She created Chicken Shack with the two latter musicians and marked the band's debut with "It's Okay With Me Baby."

Despite her successful stint, she left them in 1969 after marrying Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie.

As a fan of Fleetwood Mac, the singer made her dreams come true when she officially joined the band in 1970. She helped the band create some of its hit songs, including "Over My Head," "Little Lies," "Hold Me," "You Make Loving Fun," and "Don't Stop."

Before her death, she was still able to sit down for an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year. At that time, McVie said she never realized she was the calm eye in the middle of the storm of Fleetwood Mac when she was still with them.

She also applauded her bandmates for being great people and friends.

McVie left the group in 1998 after joining them on its reunion tour. Fortunately, she returned in 2014 and continued playing with them until 2019.
