Deerhoof is not known for taking huge breaks between releasing records, so the two years in between Breakup Song and the forthcoming La Isla Bonita seems like quite a stretch. The alt act announced the latter record to celebrate its 20th anniversary as a band. Note that La Isla will be Deerhoof's 13th LP in those 20 years.

Between those 13 albums there's plenty of experimentation and a variety of styles. What's there to expect from La Isla Bonita? Drummer Greg Saunier hinted to NME that the album was about the experience of trying to make a song that sounds like The Ramones' "Pinhead." But he also released this statement to the world:

"No band is an island. Felt like one sometimes, in those budgetless and obscure early days, Satomi and me locked in the basement trying to figure out how our clashing personalities and ideas could turn into a band. If we hadn't had that crazed mid-90s Bay Area punk scene to call home, I doubt we'd still be here to chat about a 20th anniversary. ... We don't set out to create masterpieces. The Deerhoof fan is a thrill-seeker. This is the latest volley in an ongoing conversation we've been honored to hold for 20 years."

This album is also of note as it will be the group's first to feature production from outside of the band. Godmode Records head Nick Sylvester will be assisting.

We'll be looking forward to the album dropping on November 3, as 2011's Deerhoof vs. Evil was one of our favorite records that year. For now you can check out new track "Exit Only" below:
