Lambgoat shared a screenshot Smith posted on his Instagram Story. In the statement, he expressed his sadness and gratitude as he recalled the time he spent with his co-members in Underoath in the past 20 years.

Smith, however, said that he was only "informed" of the decision, seemingly telling fans that it was not his decision to leave the band.

"After 20 years of music and friendship, I was informed that I'm no longer a member of Underoath. This saddens me to say, but unfortunately is where we have ended up," he wrote. "I appreciate everyone who, at any moment in their lives, has felt inspired, accepted, comforted, and energized by the music we created and the shows we performed together."
