Paul McCartney has written hundreds of songs throughout his career and he poured his heart and soul into each and every track. One of the Beatles' most popular songs, "Mother Nature's Son," made the singer embody a persona that was familiar to him growing up.

According to Showbiz Cheat Sheet, the Beatles member took inspiration from his childhood to write the track as he juggles his time in the city and in the countryside.

Per his book titled "The Lyrics: 1956," McCartney recalled living "on the edge" as he grew up on the edge of Liverpool. His family would constantly move from different households whenever a new housing estate was built.

During his early years, he and his brother, Michael, would play in the construction sites even though it was dangerous. In other places, he would walk into the woods to play music.

How Did Paul McCartney Write 'Mother Nature's Son'?

The musician loved being in touch with nature that's why he wrote "Mother Nature's Son." At the time when he was working on the track, he was already living in London, which is far different from his upbringing.

Since he's not in the countryside to take inspiration, he went back to his roots and embodied the persona of a "country boy" by imagining birds and wildlife.

The lyrics read, "Sit beside a mountain stream' - which it wouldn't have been; it would have been a field stream or a woodland stream. 'See her waters rise / Listen to the pretty / Sound of music as she flies. I was very fascinated by streams, and still am."

Paul McCartney Was Also Inspired by Other Things for 'Mother Nature's Son'

Aside from taking inspiration from nature and his childhood, Paul McCartney was also inspired by another country and another famous musician.

The singer recalled The Beatles' time when they went to Rishikesh, India, specifically at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram.

At the time, the band was massive, not just in their home country of the United Kingdom, but also in the world. That's why spending time at the ashram gave the members the peace that they've been craving.

In addition, he was also inspired by Nat King Cole, especially his song "Nature Boy."

After writing and recording the song, The Beatles finally released "Mother Nature's Son" in 1968.
