No one mourns the wicked! The beloved musical, which will finally be adapted into a full-blown movie musical this 2024, achieved a major milestone on Broadway recently.
The Stephen Schwartz musical is set to have its record-breaking performance on Apr. 11 at the Gershwin Theatre on Broadway.
Wicked on Broadway
According to Playbill, "Wicked" will be playing its 7,486th performance, surpassing "Cats" who had 7,485 before it closed in September 2000.
Because of this incredible feat, "Wicked" is now the 4th longest-running musical on Broadway.
The production, which started way back in October 2003, will be celebrating its 20 years this year. The roles of Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of The West, and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, were originated by Broadway icons Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth.
It has been a recipient of more than 100 international awards and was performed in more than 100 cities worldwide. In London, the production is currently on its 17th year and will relaunch in Edinbrugh this December 2023. Meanwhile, the show will also return to Austalia and another company performance in Tokyo, Japan.
The publication also noted that the musical had grossed more than $5 billion in sales and was seen by almost 65 million globally.
The cast who will be playing the 7,486th performance will be McKenzie Kurtz and Alyssa Fox, playing Glinda and Elphaba, respectively.
John Dossett, Michele Pawk, James Gish, Kimber Elayne Sprawl, Michael Wartella, and William Youmans will be playing The Wizard, Madam Morrible, Fiyero, Nessarose, Boq, and Dr. Dillamond.

Phantom of the Opera on Broadway
Currently, the longest-running musical on Broadway is "Phantom of the Opera." By the time it closes on Apr. 16, 2023, it will have performed 13,973 performances throughout its 35 years at the Majestic Theatre.
Longest Running Musicals on Broadway
Next to "Phantom" is "Chicago's" 1996 Broadway revival production. Opened in 1996, the show has already played more than 10,300 times.
"The Lion King" follows suit with almost 10,000 shows. It opened in 1997 and was the recipient of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical in 1998.
"Les Miserables" comes after "Wicked" and "Cats" at No. 6 with 6,680 performances.
"A Chorus Line" had 6,137 performances before it closed in 1990, "Oh, Calcutta!" had 6,137, "Mamma Mia!" played 5,758, and "Beauty and The Beast" stood at No. 10 with 5,461 performances.
