Ariana Grande started off the night with a space-themed performance of "Break Free." Dressed in a classy glittery get-up, she was backed by dancers wearing see-through "spacesuits. The set recreated mars with mountains and planets glowing in the distance.
The song then segued into Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda." Minaj came out onto a jungle-themed set, wearing an ivy-green, sequined two-piece. She and her painted-green dancers twerked and showcased their "ass-ets."
The medley culminated in a super-diva performance of "Bang Bang." Jessie J started it off with Ariana Grande joining in on her verse. When it came time for Nicki Minaj to spit her lines, she appeared to be holding her dress together. It must've been too quick of a costume change, but at least she avoided a revealing wardrobe malfunction.
It's safe to say the 2014 MTV VMAs started with a "Bang."
Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, and Jessie J were just one live act tonight during the performance heavy VMAs. Taylor Swift went on next with Sam Smith, Iggy Azalea & Rita Ora, Maroon 5, Usher, and Beyoncé performing later in the night.
Ariana Grande was nominated for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, and Best Collaboration.
