On September 12, during Olivia Rodrigo's VMAs performance, everyone's heartbeat was a touch too rapid.
She completely duped the audience, including 31-year-old Selena Gomez, with a fake stage mishap.
The fireworks behind Olivia, 20, who was singing "Vampire," appeared to be having trouble. Even Olivia showed signs of fear at one point. Selena could be seen holding her palm to her ear as the camera panned to the audience.
She seemed really frightened as she watched Olivia's performance.
As the "malfunction" grew worse, Olivia was hurried off stage, but it was all a performance. Olivia's "Vampire" music video, in which she is similarly hurried off stage, was referenced in the performance.
The former star of HSMTMTS came back on stage and delivered her popular song, "Get Him Back."
One of the celebrities who suddenly appeared on the VMAs red carpet before the program was Selena. In a red floral gown, the star of "The Only Murders" in the Building wowed. Selena's best friend Taylor Swift, 33, also made a surprise appearance and looked like she was straight out of Reputation in a black Versace gown.

Olivia recently addressed allegations that she and Taylor had a falling out. Notably, Olivia had to forgo millions in royalties by giving Taylor composition credit for two of the tracks on her debut album, Sour. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Olivia stated that she has no "beef with anyone."
The singer acknowledged that she was "caught off guard" by everything, though. She continued, "At the time, it was very confusing, and I was green and bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Is that the phrase?" When asked if she would make an artist give her credit for a song in case it happens down the road, Olivia responded, "I don't think I would ever personally do that. But who's to say where I'll be in 20, 30 years. All that I can do is write my songs and focus on what I can control."
Meanwhile, with a stunning photo that she posted on her Instagram Story on Monday, Selena Gomez left a lasting effect on her admirers. The 31-year-old artist posed seductively for the camera while flaunting her lean body in a sleek, jet-black bodysuit.
Gomez added a bit of glitz with a pair of gold earrings, and she beautifully put her lovely brunette hair into a tidy bun despite recent allegations that one of her new songs is about her previous relationship. Selena earlier in the day displayed her toned legs in another image on her Instagram Story. In this photograph, the former Disney Channel star bent down and used deft backlighting to highlight her fashionable ensemble, which included a sleek jacket and leather shoes.
