Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's partnership started when they swept the world with the release of "WAP" in 2020.

Since then, their friendship has blossomed into a beautiful one. Earlier this month, they announced the surprise release of "Bongos," their newest collaboration, and they performed it at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.

Cardi B Grateful For Megan Thee Stallion Friendship

Speaking to Spout podcast, Cardi B shared that she feels "special" that Megan Thee Stallion chose to work with her after taking a break from music since the Tory Lanez lawsuit.

Megan Thee Stallion sued Tory Lanez with assault which resulted in a high-profile and controversial lawsuit that got the latter into 10 years in prison.

"I feel very special. I feel really, very like thank you for trusting me," she told the podcast. "I know what it feels like when you feel like everybody, like, turned your back. Don't ever think it's because you did something wrong. You didn't do anything wrong. People just love something to deba te about."

In teasing the single weeks ago, Cardi B attested to the hard work that she and Megan put into the song and the $2 million music video.

"We put in our sweat and everything. It's like on some 'b-h, you jump, I jump... if you wit it, I I wit it. We're gonna do it.' We worked so hard on the music video. You're gonna see... that's thought put into that," she told DJ Whoo Kid on Whoo's House podcast, as quoted by Billboard.

Initially, Cardi B was unsure whether it was right to release "Bongos" now.

"Especially this one because, you know, like I haven't dropped a single in a very long time and Megan hadn't dropped a single in a very long time. So, it's just like I just want to make sure that, like, we drop like a powerful single, like a great single," she said in a conversation with Tamra Dhia.

Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion 'Bongos' VMAs Performance 'Boring'

While many seemed to be thrilled about the duo's performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, critics weren't that pleased.

Pitchfork gave a rather blunt ranking on the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards performance and ranked Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's "Bongos" as one of the worst.

"Everything about Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's "Bongos" lives in the shadow of their previous jaw-dropping collaboration "WAP," including this award show performance," the review said. "Their performance of "Bongos" at the VMAs was so boring in comparison, from the glossy blue outfits that could have used more Neon Genesis Evangelion futuristic flash to the phoned-in grinds and whines, to the song itself-a try-hard pop-rap experiment."
