Legendary American roots musician Mac Wiseman will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame later this year, but first he's releasing a new record. The 89-year-old teamed up with producers Peter Cooper and Tomm Jutz for the album Songs From My Mother's Hand.
Selections on the album came from songs his mother collected in composition books. When Wiseman was a child in Virginia his mother would listen to acts on the radio then write down the lyrics to the songs and the names of the artists who performed them.
Those songs were the foundation for Wiseman's career as a singer, and his works played a major role in helping shape what we now refer to as bluegrass music. He has released more than 50 albums spanning the genres of country, folk, and bluegrass, but Wiseman says Songs From My Mother's Hand is particularly special to him.
"Her notebook was the beginning of my life," Wiseman said in a statement. "I'd sit at the old kitchen table with a kerosene light and read, go from one page to the next."
Wiseman revisited the songs as an old man this time around, with accompaniment from Grand Ole Opry guitarist Jimmy Capps, world-class instrumentalist Thomm Jutz (Nanci Griffith, Bobby Bare, Marty Stuart), multiple Grammy-award-winning bass player Mark Fain, and 22-year-old bluegrass phenom Sierra Hull.
Songs From My Mother's Hand is due out September 23 via Wrinkled Records, but you can get an early copy for free by entering our #MightyMacMT contest on Twitter between now and Friday, September 18 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
