FKA Twigs Calvin Klein Ad Banned

According to People Magazine, Calvin Klein's ad for FKA Twigs has been banned in the United Kingdom after it received complaints for its alleged nudity in the images.

UK Advertising Standards Authority said that one of the three posters for their April 2023 campaign showed FKA Twigs, more formally known as Tahlia Barnett, as a "stereotypical sexual object."

"The side of her buttocks and half of one breast [was] exposed" in a "Calvins or nothing" ad, the ruling said.

The Kendall Jenner Calvin Klein ad also received a similar complaint, saying that she was "topless with her hands held across her bare chest."

Both complaints revealed that the photos were "overly sexualised."

"The ad used nudity and centered on FKA Twigs' physical features rather than the clothing, to the extent that it presented her as a stereotypical sexual object," the Advertising Standards Authority said in a statement. "Image's composition placed viewers' focus on the model's body rather than on the clothing being advertised."

Calvin Klein Responds To FKA Twigs Ad Being Banned

The fashion company, Calvin Klein, has responded to the complaint, saying that the said ad were "similar to ads they had been publishing in the U.K. for many years."

Calvin Klein claimed that they are "well known for being a pioneering and progressive brand that engaged in a range of equity and equality focused partnerships," and denied that they are "over sexualizing" their models.

"Calvin Klein said the images were not vulgar and were of two confident and empowered women who had chosen to identify with the Calvin Klein brand, and that the ads contained a progressive and enlightened message," the Advertising Standards Authority also added.

FKA Twigs shared on her Instagram account a photo of her photoshoot that the Ad Standards Association had banned in the United Kingdom.

"i do not see the 'stereotypical sexual object' that they have labelled me. i see a beautiful strong woman of colour whose incredible body has overcome more pain than you can imagine," she wrote. "i am proud of my physicality and hold the art i create with my vessel to the standards of women like josephine baker, eartha kitt and grace jones who broke down barriers of what it looks like to be empowered and harness a unique embodied sensuality."
