Julianna Barwick Returns to ‘Magic Place’ On New ‘Will’ LP; Stream Ahead of Release [LISTEN]

Experimental electronic producer Julianna Barwick is about to drop Will, her latest full-length studio album, via Dead Oceans. Upon first listen, the daydreamy new LP marks the singer-songwriter's return to form as cultivated on 2011's The Magic Place, only with more synths. It's not due out until May 6, but you can stream it ahead of its release here thanks to NPR.

Will features guest appearances from Thomas Arsenault (AKA electronic producer Mas Ysa), Chairlift percussionist Jamie Ingalls (also of Tanlines and Beverly) and Dutch cellist Maarten Vos, Spin reports.

Her previous album, 2013's Nepenthe, was heavily collaborative: it was produced by longtime Sigur Ros contributor Alex Somers of Jonsi & Alex, and heavily featured a host of local Icelandic artists including the Amiina string ensemble, Mum guitarist Robert Sturla Reynisson, and a choir of teenage girls. With Will, the Louisiana-born, Missouri-raised Brooklynite is isntead the sole writer and producer.

Will was recorded all over the place. Locations like the Moog Factory in Asheville, North Carolina and a house in upstate New York were chosen to record different sounds. The haunting vocals on "St. Apolonia," the album's first track, were recorded at a train underpass in Lisbon, Portugal.

Upon announcing the album's arrival, Barwick shared the swirling, echoing lead single "Nebula," which simultaneously evokes the ambience of Enya and the psychedelia of Eartheater in a similar dreamy drone vein as Pocahaunted.

"Nebula" came with an equally evocative video directed by Derrick Belcham and filmed at the Philip Johnson Glass House. Watch it below.

Barwick is currently on the first leg of a massive US/European tour in support of the new album, Thump reports. Most dates are with Mas Ysa. Check out the full list of tour dates including a stop at Moog Fest on the artist's site, here.
