Coldplay and James Corden Pay Tribute to Prince with ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ Cover
During Coldplay's concert on Sunday at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles, the band brought James Corden onstage to pay tribute to Prince by covering his song "Nothing Compares 2 U."
After the performance, the band gave a very special surprise to The Late Late Show host for his birthday.
Before inviting the talk show host to perform with them, Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin addressed the concert goers to tell them how the band met Corden. Through a made-up story, the singer said that Corden used to be a member of Coldplay who decided to leave the band to pursue his own career, according to Rolling Stone.
"What people don't know is that there was another guy that we all met and we all thought was the most talented member, and he was so good that if he had been in our band forever, we'd be the best band you ever knew," Martin told the crowd. "But instead he chose to forge his own path."
"But I'm very pleased to tell you that -- in honor of Prince tonight because we wanna honor Prince -- we managed to convince our missing and best member to come back into the band," he continued. "You may know him from things like 'Carpool Karaoke' and that kind of sh*t, but we know him as the guy who turned down being in a band with us."
Following Martin's introduction, Corden stepped onstage and thanked the members of Coldplay for letting him join the band again. He then sang "Nothing Compares 2 U," a song Prince composed, with Martin and his bandmates.
After the performance, Martin told Corden to remain onstage before surprising him with a cake for his 38th birthday. With the help from the crowd, Martin serenaded the talk show host by singing the "Happy Birthday" song, People reported.
