Jamie and Claire are 200 years apart in “Outlander” Season 3. Added to that, she returned to Boston while he still remains in Lallybroch. The latest episode picked up six years after they said goodbye at Culloden. Separated by time and space, the lovers seem to have given up all hope in seeing each other ever again.

Jamie (Sam Heughan) is still a fugitive and lives in a cave. Seeing the toll to the others, particularly his sister, who kept him in hiding, he decided to turn himself in. He made it appear that his sister “betrayed” him by tipping off the British soldiers when he was supposed to come back to Lallybroch. They did this so Jenny (Laura Donnelly) will be rewarded with money her growing family badly needed.

Claire (Caitriona Balfe) tried to make her marriage to Frank (Tobias Menzies) work specially now that they are raising a daughter together. They even began sleeping together but Frank himself knew that it was Jamie that his wife was imagining being with the whole time.

In the final moments of the “Outlander” Season 3 episode, it was revealed that Frank and Claire were sleeping in separate twin beds. This sort of made their romantic relationship really over and done. It also allowed Claire to finally take a hold of her future by going to medical school to become a surgeon.

Balfe said that her character would never have been happy with just being a stay-at-home mom. And, having shut her door on romance with Frank, she needed to channel her passion and energy to being a part of something bigger reports The Hollywood Reporter. In “Outlander”Season 3, she will have a new friend, Joe Abernathy (Wil Johnson).

Meanwhile, Menzies thinks that Frank and Claire have settled into something “quite companionable.” There is a lot of affection between them still and they work great as a team especially when it comes to raising Brianna. The actor teased that further in “Outlander” Season 3, Frank will be seeing other people.

Menzies further said that his character is a realist and will rather have a compromised marriage if it means having Claire and Brianna in his life according to Entertainment Weekly. However, he will ultimately meet someone who loves him.
