Sufjan Stevens will perform the song "Mystery of Love," from the critically-acclaimed movie Call Me By Your Name at the 90th Academy Awards.

The indie singer-songwriter received a nomination, his first, at the 2018 Oscars for Best Original Song.

Sufjan Stevens's Oscar Gig

On Sunday, March 4, Stevens will take the stage to perform "Mystery of Love" at the event. Other indie stars such as St. Vincent and Chris Thile of Punch Brothers will join him. Instrumentalists Moses Sumney, Casey Foubert, and James McAlister will also perform at the star-studded awards ceremony.

Call me By Your Name is one of the front-runners at this year's Oscars. The movie directed by Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love, A Bigger Splash) received four nominations including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. Star Timothee Chalamet received a nomination for Best Actor.

For the Best Original Song trophy, Stevens will have to battle Mary J. Blige (Mudbound), Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (Coco), Diane Warren (Marshall), and Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (The Greatest Showman).

The singer-songwriter contributed three songs to the movie: "Mystery of Love," "Visions of Gideon," and a remix of his 2010 track "Futile Devices." The song "Mystery of Love" even appeared on the Hot Rock Songs of Billboard in February.

The soundtrack also became a hit on vinyl, selling out the initial global pressing of 1,500 double LPs. Another run of yellow LPs for the United States has also sold out even before it hit record store.

Song Inspirations

About his contribution to the album, Stevens explained in a previous interview with Vulture that writing the songs "Mystery of Love" and "Visions of Gideon" for Call Me By Your Name was almost instinctive.

"I've been writing about love and loss since I was a small child," he claimed. "I have to admit that often when I'm writing music, I'm sort of at a loss for how it all transpires. It feels so immediate and impulsive that I feel like I'm almost not in control. I'm not writing in a state of ecstasy, per se, but I feel almost powerless to the creative motion."

Guadagnino declared that Stevens is one of the "greatest American artist" whose music he discovered six years ago. He told Pitchfork that he was immediately impressed by the songs that Stevens contributed to the soundtrack.

"I was one week into shooting and I listen to the songs," he shared. "I was with my editor and with Armie and Timothée, and we were shocked by the beauty, commitment, and attitude in these songs."

ABC will broadcast the 2018 Oscars on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET. Miguel, Mary J. Blige, and Common are also expected to perform.
