Charles Kelley, popularly known for being a member of country band Lady A, has been open about his sobriety journey with the public and he's ready to share more details about his personal life that made him realize that he needed to change his habits.

The musician recently dropped by the "Heart of the Matter" podcast hosted by Elizabeth Vargas where he admitted something shocking.

During the conversation, the singer recalled that back when he was still drinking, it became a norm for him to have "four or five drinks" whenever he plays golf during day time. Afterwards, he would drive himself home without anyone's guidance.

"I was driving home drunk... It was a 10-minute drive, but there [was] a couple moments where I was like, 'Wow, that was really, really dumb, really dangerous,'" he said. (via Taste of Country)

That was the time when he realized that he could've killed someone or himself.

Charles Kelley Almost Got a DUI

Elsewhere in the interview, Kelley admitted that he almost got a DUI charge during the holiday season.

At the time, his wife and son were away and this only meant that he could drink how much he wanted to as his family wasn't around.

He played golf and spent his time at a bar then before the night ends, other people around him were worried on how he would get home as he was so drunk.

"And I was like, 'Man, if I don't drive back, my wife's gonna be like, 'Where's your car?'' Even though I could've gotten it the next morning. She wouldn't have known. She wasn't there," he said.

Charles Kelley Got Pulled Over by a Police Officer

Kelley found a way to leave the bar without anyone noticing him as he snuck out at the back. As he was driving home, he got pulled over by a police officer.

The police got his license and he recognized him, asking if he was "the guy in that band." He said yes and instead of arresting him, the man pull his car over then drove him home.

The officer also never game him a ticket or anything, and for him it was a "bullet dodged."
